Excel and the load you couldn't see
Raúl López runs Kapurro’s Team from Nerja (Málaga), with athletes in trail, running, ultra and cycling. Like many coaches, he started with Excel templates. Writing the plan was the easy part; the hard part came afterwards.
In endurance sports, load is everything. Knowing how much each runner has accumulated, whether they're absorbing the work or overdoing it, is what separates a good season from an injury. In a spreadsheet that tracking depends on copying data by hand, and the more athletes, the more hours.
"I used to do it in Excel templates. The worst part was keeping track of the athletes' load."
Analysis, where the time used to go
The biggest change wasn't in programming but in what happens after each workout. With TrainerPlan, the session each runner does arrives from their watch in the calendar, next to what was planned, and the load calculates itself: each athlete's fitness, fatigue and form, without touching a cell.
"Since I started working with TrainerPlan I've saved a lot of time on daily programming, but above all on analysing each runner's data after training. Before, with 10 athletes I needed hours and hours of analysis; now, with more than 80 athletes, I spend less time on it and the tracking is more thorough."
- Load calculated, not copied — every synced workout adds to the athlete's load without moving data by hand.
- Planned against completed — every completed session sits next to the prescribed one, so deviations show at a glance.
- One look per runner — the fitness, fatigue and form trend shows who's absorbing the work and who needs to back off.
- Several disciplines — mountain, road, ultra and bike in the same calendar.
A platform that has grown with him
Raúl has been on TrainerPlan since 2017, one of the platform's earliest coaches. Over these nine years he has watched the tool change, and his verdict on the latest stage is clear.
"I have to admit TrainerPlan has made a really important leap in quality in recent months; it no longer has anything to envy other international platforms."
In 2026 alone, the strength planner and the Zwift integration arrived, among other things.
From fear to a profession
What Raúl tells at the end isn't a number. It's how he started.
"At the beginning I remember the fear of embarking on an adventure I didn't know how it would end, the fear of investing money and time in something I couldn't see very clearly. But thanks to tools like TrainerPlan I was able to develop the full potential of the ideas I had in my head, and today I can proudly say that I do this thing I'm so passionate about professionally."
Going from 10 to more than 80 athletes while spending fewer hours on analysis is what turns an idea into a job. For Raúl, the tool didn't replace the coach: it gave him the time to be one full time.
