Chronic Training Load (CTL): What It Is, How It Is Calculated and How to Use It

Chronic training load (CTL) is the most useful single number in endurance training: a rolling measure of how much work an athlete’s body has actually absorbed — and therefore how much it is prepared to handle.
Most explanations stop at “CTL is your fitness”. This guide goes further: the exact math behind chronic training load, how it interacts with acute training load (ATL) and training stress balance (TSB), where the daily numbers come from, and how coaches use all three to plan builds, recovery weeks and tapers with confidence.
The short version
- CTL — chronic training load, usually shown as “Fitness” — is an exponentially weighted average of your daily training load over the last 42 days.
- ATL — acute training load, “Fatigue” — is the same calculation over the last 7 days.
- TSB — training stress balance, “Form” — is simply CTL minus ATL: your freshness. It is negative while you build and rises when you rest or taper.
- The daily load feeding the model can come from power or from plain heart rate (TRIMP) — you do not need a power meter.
- Rules of thumb: raise CTL by roughly 3–7 points per week, keep the acute-to-chronic ratio between 0.8 and 1.3, and arrive at key races with a clearly positive TSB.
What is chronic training load?
Chronic training load is a rolling, weighted average of your daily training load over roughly the past six weeks, with recent days counting more than older ones. The idea comes from the impulse-response models of Eric Banister and was popularized by Dr. Andrew Coggan, with CTL appearing as the “Fitness” line on performance charts.
It helps to be precise about what CTL is not. It is not a physiological measurement like VO2max or lactate threshold. A CTL of 80 does not tell you how fast an athlete is — it tells you they have been sustaining around 80 points of training load per day, and their body is adapted to roughly that amount of work. That is exactly what makes it useful for planning: it defines the level of training an athlete can absorb right now, and how far away a target load is.
The math: how CTL is actually calculated
Each day, chronic training load takes a small step toward that day’s load:
CTL today = CTL yesterday + (today’s load − CTL yesterday) ÷ 42
In plain language: every day, your Fitness closes about 2.4% of the gap between where it is and what you did today. A monster 300-point day nudges a CTL of 60 up by less than 6 points. A rest day pulls it down by barely 1.5. That is the whole point — no single workout can move CTL meaningfully. Only weeks of consistency can.
Acute training load uses the identical formula with 7 in place of 42, so it closes about 14% of the gap every day. Same input, two time horizons: ATL reacts within days, CTL within weeks.
Three practical consequences follow directly from the math:
- Building fitness takes about six weeks. After a genuine step up in training, CTL needs four to six weeks to stabilize at the new level. Plan blocks accordingly.
- Fitness decays more slowly than athletes fear. On a rest day CTL only slips about 2.4% of the way toward zero. A full week off costs a 60-point CTL roughly 8 points — annoying, not catastrophic.
- Fresh charts start from zero. The model has no memory of training it never saw, so during the first weeks on any platform CTL understates real fitness until enough history accumulates.
ATL and TSB: fatigue and form
Training stress balance is calculated as yesterday’s CTL minus yesterday’s ATL — your form at the start of the day, before today’s session counts. When you have recently done more than your body is used to, TSB goes negative and you feel heavy. When you back off, ATL falls much faster than CTL and TSB climbs into positive territory: freshness.
Ranges most coaches work with:
- −10 to −30: productive overload — where the bulk of a training block should live.
- Below −30: high strain; the risk of illness, injury and non-functional overreaching rises quickly if you stay here.
- −10 to +5: neutral zone — maintenance, transition weeks, recovery weeks.
- +15 to +25: the classic race-day window at the end of a taper.
One trap deserves its own warning: a high TSB only means “fresh relative to recent training”. High form combined with low, falling fitness is detraining, not race readiness. Form is only valuable when there is fitness underneath it.
Where the daily load number comes from
CTL, ATL and TSB are only as good as the daily load value feeding them. There are three common ways that value is produced:
- Power. For cycling and rowing with a power meter, each session earns a load score from its duration and how intense it was relative to your FTP, calibrated so that one hour at threshold equals exactly 100 points.
- Heart rate (TRIMP). TRIMP (training impulse) weights every minute of a session by heart-rate reserve using an exponential curve, so time near threshold counts far more than easy time. A raw TRIMP is not on that 100-point scale, but it can be normalized — divide by the TRIMP of one hour at threshold heart rate and multiply by 100 — and heart-rate sessions become directly comparable with power sessions.
- Manual adjustment. For the odd session with no usable data, the load can be entered or corrected by hand, so the chart stays honest.
Two data-quality rules matter more than the choice of metric. First, keep thresholds current: an outdated FTP, max heart rate or threshold heart rate quietly corrupts every number downstream. Second, understand how gaps are handled: a skipped workout should count as zero — your chart should reflect what you actually did, with planned load only projecting into the future.
How to use CTL, ATL and TSB in your training
- Ramp CTL gradually. An increase of 3–7 points per week is sustainable for most athletes; very fit athletes can hold the top of that range for short blocks. Faster ramps show up first as deeply negative TSB, then as illness or injury.
- Watch the acute-to-chronic ratio. Dividing ATL by CTL gives a workload ratio with well-studied zones: below 0.8 suggests undertraining, 0.8–1.3 is the sweet spot, 1.3–1.5 is a caution zone and above 1.5 carries the highest relative injury risk.
- Plan recovery weeks. Every third or fourth week, let TSB drift back toward zero. CTL barely drops, and the athlete absorbs the block.
- Taper into races. Cut volume 40–60% while keeping intensity. CTL loses only a few points while ATL collapses, and TSB climbs into the +15 to +25 window for race day.
- Never coach the number alone. Sleep, stress, nutrition and how the athlete actually feels are not in the model. The chart is a map, not the territory.
Common mistakes with CTL
- Chasing CTL as a score. Load is not quality. Two athletes with identical CTL can be training completely differently — one polarized and progressing, one grinding junk miles toward injury.
- Comparing CTL between athletes. Different sports, different thresholds and different load metrics make cross-athlete comparisons meaningless. Compare an athlete with their own history.
- Trusting numbers built on stale thresholds. Re-test FTP and review heart-rate values regularly, especially after fitness changes.
- Misreading form after a break. A big positive TSB after two weeks off means detrained and rested — not ready for intensity.
- Forgetting it is a model. CTL describes training input, not adaptation. Two athletes can absorb the same load very differently.

What is a good CTL?
There is no universal number. Recreational endurance athletes often sit around 40–70, committed amateurs 70–100, and professionals can exceed 120. The trend and its sustainability matter far more than the absolute value — and CTL should never be compared between athletes.
How fast can I safely increase CTL?
Common guidance is 3–7 points per week. Watch the weekly change in Fitness and keep the acute-to-chronic ratio under 1.3; sharper ramps are only for short, deliberate overload blocks followed by real recovery.
What is the difference between CTL and ATL?
